Jun 17, 2017 - How do I enter Hawaiian diacritical marks (okina and kahako) in Word? A version of normal.dotm with both the correct fonts from the Unicode. Mac Computers. Mac users do not need to download a font because the keyboard is already built in to the MacOSX. The following video shows you how to turn on the Hawaiian Keyboard for MacOSX.
Some of the suggestions were on a helpful path but the cleanest answer came from Hawaii.edu/askus/1329, which provided a link to download a version of normal.dotm with both the correct fonts from the Unicode Latin Extended A keyboard and shortcut key combinations to type the needed Hawaiian diacritics, as well as a starter list of common Hawaiian words with these diacritics entered into the Autocorrect feature of MS Word (options - proofing - autocorrect button) so that I can quickly type in the word without the diacritics, press the space bar, and have the correct 'spelling' appear.
I am adding to the autocorrect list as I encounter new words so that once it is entered, I don't have to manually enter the shortcut keys every time a diacritical is called for in a word. I type the word with the diacritics, Cntrl + C to copy it, go to the Autocorrect box, click in the 'Replace with' box, then Cntrl+V to paste it. Then, in the box labeled 'Replace' I type the letters I have chosen (for a few very frequently used words I'll use a short abbreviation but otherwise I simple type in the letters of the word without the diacritics). Click on Save and then on OK.
At this point, because I am writing a book with numerous Hawaiian words being used, I, while still in the Proofing feature, and while I still have the word in Clipboard, click on the Custom Dictionaries box (in the middle of the Proofing page) then, under 'All Languages' click on the Hawaiian.dic custom dictionary I have created (you could just use the Custom.dic supplied by Microsoft), click on the 'Edit Word List' button, click in the 'Words' box, then Cntrl+V to paste the word, followed by OK, OK, OK to get me back to Word.
While the Hawaiian language is unique in that its most common diacritical is not an accent, perhaps some of these principles could be applied to other languages.
